Donut fenders are, very simply, a donut-shaped type of foam-filled floating fender which are designed to slip over a stationary monopile. They have also been supplied into other applications - such as protecting jack-up legs.
The principle of such fenders is that they float up and down with the tide
therefore ensuring optimum protection at all times. They are also designed to freely rotate around the pile to allow vessels to slide along them into the required position - making them ideal for applications such as lock and dry dock entrances and protecting bridge supports.
Main advantages of donut fenders
High energy absorption/low reaction force compared to bucking type
rubber fender
Low shear forces as the fender rotates, combined with low-friction skin
Self-adjusts with the water level to always be in the correct position
Quick and easy to install - simply slipped over a pile
Low ongoing maintenance requirements
