ROLLY GO Cantieri Sangermani

- 15.64m 51' 4"ft If the Guia 2000 had seemed a gamble to anyone who did not believe in the use of revolutiotuiry materials, Rolly Go rnust have seemed like a certainty, a true racer of clean Unes born ofprevious experience. As a resuit of co-operation with Luca Olivari and of the invaluable advice ofing. Fabio Buzzi, the honeycomb was replaced with spécial aeronautical balsa, weighing 96 kg/m 3. So an avant-garde bout was created, m a de up of a sandwich oftwo exterior layers ofKevlar 49, woven in mats of230, 350 and 480 g/m2, with the balsa in the middle; the whole was glued with epoxy resin. Launched on 4 April 1981, the weight of the hull and the deck was kept down to 1,320 kilograms. înternally she was divided into two zones, one for resting and the other for working; the former, in the stem, was fitted with bunk beds and cupboard, while the letter, amidship, provides plenty of room for the navigator to use the charts and calculate the course; there is also a galley and bathroom. The two areas are connected by a broad opening 80 cm wide. In the bows is the sail locker.

There are two observation structures on deck protecting the two cockpits aft, one with a curved transparent screen giving a field ofview 160° and the other for the helmsman which is a box-like construction made of Plexiglas to give ail-round vision. The yacht was designed by German Frers and built by Sangermani to take part in the longest, hardest race of ail, the Whitbread Round the World Race.
