The ‘Lambeth’ is the first of the new Wave Guardian class of pilot / patrol boats from Alnmaritec. She has the brand new ‘Wave Length’ hull form developed and tank tested with the University of Newcastle specifically designed for low wake and low fuel consumption. She is the first in what will surely be a new generation of ‘environmentally friendly’ harbour patrol boats and with a top speed of over 21 knots using only 400bhp of installed power she represents a significant break with traditional displacement designs. She has a comfortable wheelhouse with a small galley, a WC and seating for 12 passengers as well as ample working deck space and twin dive platforms aft. She is also fitted with two sets of pilot boarding steps which can be removed when she is not engaged in pilot duties and a lowering mast for low air draft bridges. As a result of the abrasive nature of the sediment in her operational waters the main engines are keel cooled and the stern tubes are fully enclosed and oil lubricated rather than water lubricated. She has custom designed propellers tested in the cavitation tunnel at the University and a host of other novel design features which mark her out as a true step forward in patrol boat design.
