Seals have been developed to operate on propeller shafts of small, medium and large size boats where a high level of reliability is required.
The special design allows large axial displacement and the use of suitable material guarantees as well as high resistance to corrosion and high mechanical resistance to withstand stresses produced by vibrations.
The installation of mechanical seals in this particular field has solved problems such as corrosion during long periods of inactivity and shaft damage caused by traditional stuffing boxes. Power absorption is considerably reduced as well.

The Tides Marine Spare Seal Carrier Kit is used in conjunction with the Tides Marine SureSeal dripless propeller shaft system.
It provides a convenient way of storing a replacement lip seal on the propeller shaft during installation of the SureSeal.
This allows the change of a damaged or worn lip seal without uncoupling the shaft from the transmission.
If necessary the lip seal can be replaced with the craft afloat.

The use of face seals allows us to resolve the typical problems in which, over time, the installation of the traditional stuffing box incurs, that is wear on the shaft, wet bilge and continuous tightening of the packing, etc. Schematically, the face seal is made up of two parts: one that is stationary and one that rotates. The stationary part is generally fixed to the packing box; the rotating part is fixed to the shaft and turns with it. Thus there is no wear on the shaft: in fact the true seal is found perpendicular to the shaft in two micro lapped surfaces that rub against one another. The elastic bellows or springs recuperate eventual surface wear, thus the constant tightening of the packing is not required. Moreover, the presence of bellows and/or springs, in addition to recuperating wear, serves to compensate eventual misalignment, absorbing vibrations or sudden shifts of the shaft.

The stripper protects your propeller. It keeps your propeller clear of rubbish by shredding it into harmless fragments. The stripper is an assembly of rotating cutting blades that interlock around the shaft in front of the propeller. A fixed blade runs in bearing integral with the rotating cutter resulting in a shearing action as the blades pass each other. The patented shape of the blades puts real strength at the base where it's needed. The needle sharp teeth extend in an elegant outward curve to the very tips of the blade. This results in a cutting action that is smoothest possible. Even a low powered engine can cut through large ropes easily.

The simplest way to keep your propeller and shaft free from fouling ropes and submerged debris, the Shaft Razor Cutter has been tested and marketed in Europe for several years and is now available through The Evolution Company Inc. The Shaft Razor Cutter can be installed where there is little space on the shaft
The Shaft Razor Cutter consists of a machined circular blade manufactured from a high grade of stainless steel (316L) with a sharp serrated cutting edge. It is accurately machined to the shaft diameter and kept securely in place by set screws to the shaft. Once installed, the Shaft Razor Cutter rotates with the shaft and gently cuts anything that becomes entangled on the shaft/propeller. installation consists of simply removing the propeller and sliding the Shaft Razor Cutter onto the shaft and tightening the set-screws.
The Shaft Razor Cutter can be installed where there is little space on the shaft.

The PSS Shaft Seal, large model, manufactured for 15 years, uses the well-known system of mechanical seal in order to assure complete water tightness between the propeller shaft and the boat, unlike other brand which uses either a lip seal or a packing gland.
Because of its choice of material, the PSS Shaft Seal can operate in all kind of environment, including salty/sandy waters. Also unlike other type of seals there is no contact, therefore no wear, between the sealing surface and the shaft.
All these qualities make the PSS Shaft Seal the most common brand of Shaft Seals found on the pleasure boat industry today.
Less known is the fact that the PSS Shaft Seals are also very common on all type of work boats (Small ferries, crew boats, fishing boats, coast guards, tugs etc…) as these seals are manufactured for shafts up to 200mm. A big endorsment is the fact that the US Coast Guards use the PSS Shaft Seal. One huge advantage of these seals on a commercial boat is the lack of maintenance required added to the fact that these seal do not wear the shaft down.
The PSS is approved by RINA, VERITAS, and ABS.

Bronze dripless shaft seal with nitrile seal element. Available in sizes 1" to 3". Chatfield Blue Water seals are Germanischer Lloyd approved.
Chatfield Marine has developed a propeller shaft flexible seal unit designed to be retrofitted to existing stern tube assemblies or installed in new boats— the Blue Water Seal. This is a proven system that is NZ MSA approved for use in commercial boats and is now used as standard equipment by well known boat builders.
The seal element can be easily removed should it be damaged or need replacing with no need to replace the entire unit as new seals elements are readily available from our spare parts department
The Blue Water Seal has a built-in safety feature to keep sea water out of the boat. If the seal element is damaged the seal retaining plate can be converted into a gland follower by placing a ring of greasy hemp gland packing under it to form an effective temporary seal allowing a replacement to be fitted at leisure.
These water cooled units are manufactured from cast admiralty bronze, chosen for its excellent bearing and salt water resistant properties. They are available for 25-76mm (1”- 3”) shaft diameters.

This high performance second generation Duplex stainless alloy is recommended as having one of the finest combinations of properties for propeller shafting and is highly competitive in price. The alloy has excellent corrosion fatigue resistance properties, and combined with high strength and ductility, enables the use of comparatively smaller shaft diameters. The consequent reduction in weight, and size of associated gear offers improved boat performance and economy of installation and boat operation.
