A scuba regulator allows a diver to breathe by delivering the compressed air in the tank on demand and at ambient pressure. The first stage of the regulator connects directly to the tank. The second stage supplies air through a mouthpiece held between the diver's teeth. A back-up second stage is called an octopus.
ApplicationsCertain regulators are designed for very cold water or use at great depth.
TechnologiesRegulator first stages use either piston or diaphragm technology. They connect to the tank via a threaded DIN or yoke fitting. An octopus is mounted on a hose that is longer and of a different color than that of the primary second stage to make it easily identifiable and accessible. It is used in case of gear failure and facilitates sharing air with a dive partner who has run out.
How to chooseA piston first stage uses a mechanism that is simpler, more reliable and easier for the diver to service. Diaphragm first stages are better adapted to harsh environments (e.g., very cold water, high turbidity) and require less maintenance because most of the mechanism is isolated from contact with the water.
A balanced first and/or second stage offers easier breathing, particularly at great depth. All regulators should be inspected and serviced regularly.
