Using the latest CFD-methods, parameters were found, that enables a significant improvement in bollard pull and at the same time reducing the nozzle resistance at free running speeds.
The solution was found by designing the interior surface of the nozzle for maximum bollard pull, whereas the exterior surface was optimized for high free running efficiency. The nozzle design optimization was performed for the complete propulsor, i.e. including also the underwater part of the propulsion unit itself.

The application of a nozzle increases the thrust at relatively low ship speeds. Significant savings in fuel consumption can be achieved depending on the number of revolutions and the capacity of the engine. Nozzles are aerofoil shaped rings placed around the propeller.

Stabilizer
Retractable Fin Stabilizers, Type S
Our retractable Simplex-Compact fin stabilizers provide an ideal solution for many kinds of merchant vessels, such as ferries, cruise ships and yachts.
For vessels with a low to medium service speed and a demand for high roll reduction performance, we have developed a special tail flap which increases the roll reduction efficiency up to 15% compared with conventional two-part fin stabilizers. This so-called Ultra High Lift Fin is protected by an international patent.
Benefits:
- Compact and proven design
- Equipped with the Anti-Vortex-Tip
- Ecodyn hydraulic power system for a highly dynamic response without peaks in demand
- Fin box fitted with a flow-off recess to minimize the flow resistance
- Unit is delivered ready for operation
- Fitted with rotary vane actuators for powerful and reliable operation
- Easy handling with intuitive operating elements
- Wear-resistant sensors to register the ship movements

Fuel savings and a reduction in emissions can be achieved with Wärtsilä Energopac. This is an integrated propulsion and steering system which increases the propulsion efficiency, but does not compromise on manoeuvring characteristics and comfort levels. Energopac includes a special propeller design, a sophisticated high-lift flap rudder equipped with an efficiency bulb and a special fairing cap connected to the propeller hub. The bulb and fairingcap work together to streamline the water flow behind the propeller while the twisted leading edge and rudderflap reduce rudder drag. Depending on the 11 specific application, the power savings and emissions control with Wärtsilä Energopac may result in operational savings of up to 9%.

SCHOTTEL Rudderpropellers (SRP) are combined propulsion and steering systems rated at up to 6000 kW, which convert the engine power into optimum thrust. As the underwater components can be steered through 360 degrees, the full propulsive power can also be used for manoeuvring and dynamic positioning of the ship.
Maximum manoeuvrability, optimum efficiency, economical operation, space-saving installation and simple maintenance - these are just a few of the outstanding features of this robust and reliable propulsion concept, which has proved its worth under tropical and arctic conditions in vessels of all kinds all over the globe.
