ApplicationsThese devices protect metal hulls from corrosion. They are also used to protect propeller shafts and fittings, rudder fittings and other metal parts on non-metal hulls.
TechnologiesWhen two metals are in contact in the water, the less noble has a lower electrical potential. This generates an electrical current from the more to the less noble metal, driving ions of the latter into the water. Little by little, the less noble metal corrodes away. The sacrificial anode is less noble than the metal parts of the boat, protecting them as it corrodes.
How to chooseChoice will be influenced by water salinity and vessel size, among other factors. Aluminum anodes are favored for fresh water use because of their greater redox potential. Anodes attached with bolts or screws are easier to replace than welded versions.
