A Yokohama fender is used to absorb impacts between ships or between ship and dock.
Such devices are used in ports to absorb impact between dock and maneuvering ships, as well as at sea when two vessels lie alongside one another.
This fender is a very large, air-filled cylinder made of several layers of rubber covered by a chain-and-tire net. It compresses upon impact to absorb the energy of contact. Its length ranges from one to nine meters. Models more than 2.5 meters in diameter usually have a pressure relief valve.
Choice will depend on the fender's intended use, vessel size and weather and sea conditions, among other factors.
