Short and wide is not the answer! We listened to the experts when we were designing our Viper range of Beginner/Family boards - the vast network of windsurfing school organisations. This network provides us with great feedback to design boards that will both attract and keep beginners in our sport. These schools have immense experience with all types of beginners and their input directly influenced our Viper range - modern design concepts combined with proven experience.
Long, stretched outlines and a finely-tuned CAD stretched power rocker line guarantee a long waterline. This is essential for maximal sub-planing performance and paves the way to first time planing experience. The perfect and equally balanced volume distribution makes Windsurfing fun and easy - from the very first step on the board. A daggerboard system vastly increases the sub planing performance by offering additional stability. Great beginner, fun and family boards.
For many beginners the step from a beginner board to a conventional freerider was too big and they got out of windsurfing again as there was no fun. The Funsters combine the easy handling of a beginner board with the performance of a freerider. Advanced riders should not underestimate the fun you can have on those boards.

THE EASY CHOICE
The Rio is simply about windsurfing as Jim Drake intended it to be: everyone, everywhere and everytime.
The new shapes have evolved to offer the joys of pure freeriding to all, from beginners and progressing windsurfers to families and advanced riders, everytime: whether there's wind or just a light breeze, the new Rios offer more glide in the light stuff and a smoother transition on to the plane as it gets windier.
For advanced riders, the longer, narrower shape combined with the inboard heel-recesses and more flexible daggerboard allows the board to power upwind off the leeward rail. When planing, the wide tail with large cutaways and tail side-cuts deliver a powerful and exciting ride.
For intermediate and progressing windsurfers, the security of the daggerboard gives the confidence to go out without worrying about drifting. The radical deck design with its heel gutters and inboard-only footstrap settings make it easier than ever to get into the footstraps for the first time.
For beginners, the Rios pack plenty of rail volume around the midsection for optimum stability. The longer shape with a lower rocker offers a smooth gliding sensation straight from the start.

Starboard's Starts have always been the benchmark entry level board ever since they were first introduced in 1999 thanks to their remarkably stable, easy-planing and feature packed designs. For 2008, the new longer Start M and L have evolved to offer more glide and more longitudinal stability, with a radical new deck design that makes it easier than ever to progress to planing.
Specially designed heel gutters in the back part of the board allow intermediate and advanced sailors to stand close to the board's centre line, giving the rider full comfort, full grip and full control without having to learn to stand out on the rail of the board. The straps are positioned right there close to the center line, so the sailor conveniently steps into the center straps with the natural feeling of having a nicely curved rail under their feet.
The new Start boards plane up smoothly and quickly: they have a new super wide tail design derived from the shape of the Apollo - the World's earliest planing board - to create lift efficiently and plane earlier. Designed with a lot of passion for our youngest riders, Sebastian Wenzel used his "personal test team" of three sons to develop the new Ripper: "Bringing the sensation of windsurfing to the youth of today is the biggest pleasure since they are the future of our sport. With this in mind I designed the Ripper to be as easy as possible - so that anybody trying this board will get addicted to windsurfing, like I was, when I started over 20 years ago."

The exciting Kona Concept called for a supplementary model, so we did the logical thing and developed a smaller version,- the KONA SURF. This "sister ship" is shorter with less width, yet the duck tail remain at the same length as the Kona and Kona Style. As a result the board feels ultra short ones on the plane.
Despite reduced width, we have kept the exact proportions of the original Kona. The centerboard is still big enough to provide efficient railing up wind, while the 38 cm fin will give the feel of being on a fast free ride board. This "short longboard" is a natural wave tool. The Kona Surf will allow you to surf waves of any size, and the pintail outline ensure excellent grip through carves at any speed. |
