A waterski boat is one specifically designed to provide proper equipment and performance for this sport. It should create minimal wake, contrary to the broad, hollow wake needed for wakeboarding.
In the past, waterskiing was of three principal types: slalom, jumping and freestyle. With the arrival of wakeboarding and its spectacular freestyle performances, waterski boats are used primarily for slalom, which requires the flattest water surface possible.
In order to produce the flattest wake possible, great pains are taken to design waterski boats with appropriate hull configurations, center of gravity and location of drive elements. They usually have inboard engines with drive shaft and propeller or sterndrive. The powerplant and propulsive components are designed for rapid acceleration and stabilization of the craft.
The purpose-built waterski boat performs well when towing skiers, but is less adaptable to other aquatic activities. Wakeboarding boats require ballast and a hollower hull shape.
