How to choose this product

A waterproof housing protects equipment from shock and moisture.

Applications

Housings for multimedia and imaging devices make it possible to use cameras and video cameras underwater. They also exist for smartphones, tablet computers, iPhone®, iPad®, iPod® and the like.

This enables the increasingly popular navigational and communications functions of these devices to be used on deck, protected from spray and shock. Housed electronic instruments, portable GPS, VHF, radios and other gear can be exposed to foul weather without fear.

Technologies

All housings are made of shock-proof plastic. Polymer O-rings are used to make them weather- or waterproof. An international index rates them for degree of ingress resistance. For example, the interior of an IPX7 housing remains dry after immersion for 30 minutes at a depth of one meter (see link, below).

How to choose

Choice will depend on type of device and degree of protection, which ranges from entirely waterproof and submersible to spray-resistant. Camera housings are make- and model-specific.
