Waterproof overalls cover the torso and legs, and are used for offshore and heavy-weather sailing. They are sleeveless, usually have suspenders and keep the wearer dry even in the worst conditions.
ApplicationsWorn under a sailing jacket, these garments are especially recommended for sailors in regions known for cold, stormy weather.
TechnologiesSuch overalls are of synthetic materials made waterproof by impregnation with polyurethane or another product. Gore-Tex® and similar fabrics are also breathable. Certain models have neoprene or latex cuffs to prevent water entering at the wrists and ankles.
Some have reflective strips and pockets, which can be lined with fleece. The suspenders and waist bands are generally adjustable. Certain versions are reinforced at the knees and buttocks, and sometimes include padding.
Other than aesthetics, choice will depend on the person's age and sex. Some overalls are better-suited to blue-water navigation and harsh weather than lighter models.
