The SCHOTTEL Electric Propulsor (SEP) and the Siemens-SCHOTTEL Propulsor (SSP) are innovative propulsion systems which differ mainly in the kind of electric motors housed in the pods.
The two pillars of the SSP – a joint development of Siemens and SCHOTTEL – are the SCHOTTEL Twin Propeller technology and a permanently-excited motor (PEM) from Siemens characterised by its high efficiency and slim-line construction.
With the SEP SCHOTTEL offers a propulsion system with asynchronous or synchronous motors depending on the owner/shipyard request and application of the vessel.

Installing an electric bow or stern thruster in a petrol (gasoline) engined boat can be very dangerous, due to the possibility of the electric motor igniting fuel vapour.
In order to eliminate the risk, this special housing will shield the bow or stern thruster from potentially explosive vapour. The housing enables the thruster to comply with the ISO 8846 Marine "ignition protection" standard. In addition to the standard thruster, the set consists of a watertight (IP65) housing for the electric motor and relays, together with all required seals, electrical connectors and fastening components. An automatic fuse for the control loom is also supplied. This can be reset externally without opening the housing.

Swing retracting thrusters are ideal for higher performance sailing yachts, and fast planing or semi-displacement hulls. With the thruster in a raised position it offers a completely fair hull section causing minimum drag. Lewmar has now introduced a completely new and simple design, which is a logical step forward from the current successful range.
This design is in keeping with Lewmar's environmental concerns and has no hydraulic motors or hoses in the water. Unlike many manufacturers, all of this componentry is housed inside the hull, preventing pollution in the event of an oil leak.

The Prop-eye 170 is powered by alternating current (ac). When using the battery the provided potential transformer changes the co-current flow (dc) into alternating current (ac). Naturally it can also be driven without potential transformer driven directly by a generator.
So the Prop-eye 170 with its 40 kp thrust is an ideal combination as bow and stern thrusters under usage of the battery or a generator, or as an auxiliary drive under usage of a generator.

In sailing vessels where inadequate immersion is possible for traditional tunnel thrusters, retractable thrusters can offer a solution. These have been developed over 20 years and the range now extends up to 90 kW.
These thrusters are also available as a version where the unit can be rotated 90o for use as emergency propulsion.
