A survival suit is a waterproof drysuit designed to reduce loss of body heat when worn in cold water. The SOLAS Convention defines minimum standards for these garments. Certain high-buoyancy models also may be classified as life jackets, eliminating the need for a separate device.
Such suits are used when abandoning ship in cold waters. They protect against hypothermia and provide a certain amount of buoyancy.
Survival suits are made of waterproof and fire-retardant materials, are easy to unpack and can be donned in less than two minutes. They must cover the entire body, except the face, and have strips of reflective tape meeting SOLAS standards.
Criteria include size, design and buoyancy characteristics. All survival suits intended for maritime use must comply with SOLAS regulations.
