The surface piercing propeller is specially designed and mounted so that more than half its diameter rides above the surface of the water when operating at high speed.
Such propellers are used primarily for high-speed operation.
These propellers are mounted in such a way that half their diameter rides out of the water. This is accomplished by considerably elongating the propeller shaft, extending it well beyond the vessel's stern. As the propeller blades leave the water, they generate small bubbles, creating a vacuum forward of the propeller. These propellers may be fixed or articulated.
Choice will depend on an ensemble of factors including length of drive shaft, blade size and usual vessel trim. Manufacturers have software allowing them to suggest and even simulate different models.
