Kayaks

Need help
choosing?

The kayaker sits in the bottom of the craft, very close to the water. A double paddle is used to propel, steer and trim the kayak. Though kayaks and canoes are often confused, they represent different types of craft.

Applications

Some of the different types of kayak are: flatwater, white-water, ocean, sit-on-top, inflatable and surf kayaks. Each is designed for a particular sport or competition.

Technologies

Generally, a skirt fits tightly around the user's waist, forming a waterproof seal between the kayaker and the kayak. This keeps the user dry and makes it possible to right the craft via an Eskimo roll in case of capsize. Kayaks come in one- to four-person models. They are built of a wide range of materials: a skin stretched over a wooden frame, plastic or even highly sophisticated composites to save weight and increase rigidity.

How to choose

Water conditions and intended use will dictate choice of kayak. A suitable craft will ensure maximum enjoyment and security.
