The Online Boating and Maritime Exhibition
A spray top is a pullover-style marine windbreaker.
These garments are a good compromise between heavier sailing coats and light jackets. Their main advantage is effective protection against wind and water thanks to the absence of a front zipper.
There is a wide selection, ranging from traditional, non-waterproof fabric tops to those of modern high-tech materials. Recent models are made from breathable fabrics, some with neoprene or polyurethane neck and cuff seals to ensure perfect waterproofing.
Type of craft and its intended use will determine the degree of sophistication needed in the top. Those for dinghy sailing must be waterproof without hindering movement.
Others are more suited to offshore use. Waterproof and warm, they often feature a central pouch pocket, sometimes lined with fleece. This is ideal for warming the hands in cold areas or during winter outings. Canoe and kayak versions are light and allow maximum range of arm motion.
