Sport yachts are sailing vessels (sailing yacht) or motorized crafts (motor-yacht) over 15 meters long, with hydrodynamic hulls and powerful propelling systems (rigging or motor).
Sport yachts appeal to wealthy sailors looking for speed and luxury, and to charter companies, for regattas, cruises, or long travels.
Such crafts are quite large and are often made of aluminum or composite materials (kevlar, fiberglass, carbon with epoxy or polyester resins), and sometimes wood or steel.
They feature numerous amenities (bow/stern thrusters, air conditioning, home cinema, etc.).
Most of these yachts are based upon custom-designed variations on production hulls. Some owners employ interior decorators to personalize the living spaces.
The number of cabins and the distribution of interior spaces depends on the vessel's program (regatta, cruise, etc.). Some are extremely modular, and can be used for any type of program.
Sailing yachts will be designed for regattas or for fast cruising. Slower than sport motor-yachts, they feature unique lines, and navigate silently and autonomously at comparatively much lower cost (maintenance and fuel).
Sport motor-yachts are built for speed and unparalleled comfort. They feature planing hulls and extremely powerful motorization, and allow to reach ports of call at top speeds. Their fuel-consumption gives them limited navigation autonomy.
