How to choose this product
spinnaker-pole

A spinnaker pole is a hollow spar designed to keep the tack of a symmetrical spinnaker outboard, to windward. Creative sailors also have found it suitable for hanging a hammock.

Applications

The pole is necessary for flying a symmetrical spinnaker. It can be used on cruising or racing sailboats, centerboarders, keel boats and sailing dinghies.

Technologies

These poles must be strong enough to handle the compression forces exerted by the sail toward the mast, as well as occasional, sudden immersions. They are often of aluminum or carbon, the latter to save weight.

Each end has a clip or jaws, one end attached to a fitting near the base of the mast, the other to the tack of the sail. Some poles have a male fitting that goes into a socket on the mast. The pole must also be fitted for a downhaul and a topping lift, either in the middle or at the end, in the case of a large pole.

How to choose

Choice will depend on sail dimensions, especially the foot length and the distance from mast to forestay. Boat size, displacement and pole rigging (downhaul, topping lift) also must be considered. The nature of the mast fitting, whether ring or socket, stationary or sliding, is another factor. Racers should consider a carbon pole to facilitate the job of the foredeck crew. Extremely large sails may require two poles for easier jibing.
