A soundproofing panel is used in marine construction to limit sound transmission between two compartments.
These panels are widely used to insulate engine rooms aboard cruising vessels.
Such panels usually are constructed of several different materials whose combined sound-absorbing properties increase efficacy. Flexible or rigid sandwiches may include plywood, rubber, polyurethane, mineral or vegetable fibers, aluminum or honeycomb material, among others. Some use an eggcrate structure to enhance soundproofing.
Choice of rigid or flexible panel will depend on the configuration of the the bulkhead to be insulated. Panels offering thermal insulation should be considered where appropriate. Material weight and density are important characteristics for optimization of the efficacy-to-weight ratio.
