A solar boat is powered by one or more electric motors. These motors may run directly off solar panels, but there is usually an intermediate bank of batteries to better manage energy use.
This type of craft first appeared on inland waterways. Low speed limits and the presence of nearby shoreline permit boating with such a limited energy source. Recent technological advances now enable ocean use of solar boats. For increased security, they may be equipped with an internal combustion engine to recharge the batteries.
A solar boat carries photovoltaic panels on deck and/or the roof. A large surface area must be devoted to the panels to meet energy needs, depending on the type of boat. A bank of batteries stores the energy and supplies it to the electric motor, which turns the propeller. Electric power is particularly flexible and remains effective at all speeds.
