A slalom water ski is designed for repeated turns in alternate directions. The skier slaloms between buoys, towed at high speed by a boat with a powerful engine.
These specialized skis are popular among amateurs and experienced competitors, alike.
Slalom skis have a hydrodynamic shape particularly suited to high-speed turns. This includes a concave underside, a broad tip and parabolic sides. Many are asymmetrical for better turning. Most are of carbon fiber, sometimes mixed with Kevlar® or PVC. Training models are frequently made of fiberglass.
Choice will depend on the skier's height and weight. Light, high-performance carbon skis are best for competition.
