Ship heat exchangers are used for heating and air conditioning, evaporative refrigeration and to heat or cool oil or fuel, among other uses.
There are three main types of heat exchanger: tube, plate and compact. Two fluids at different temperatures circulate in close proximity without mixing (within concentric coils, for example). This results in one being cooled or heated, or the cooling of one and the heating of the other.
Choice will depend on the fluid to be heated or cooled, since the exchanger should be suitable for its intended application.
