A ships gas turbine is an internal combustion engine operating at high revolutions per minute (rpm). It usually serves as a vessel's main engine, providing either a large quantity of electrical energy or mechanical energy via a gearbox.
Such turbines are often combined with other engine types in mixed power systems. The most common hybrid configurations join gas turbines with steam engines, diesels or diesel-electric engines.
These engines use Brayton's three-stage thermodynamic cycle: compression, ignition and fluid expansion. They can be used to produce electricity or mechanical energy. In the latter case, the linkage to the shaft must include a gearbox to reduce the turbine's 3500 rpm to the considerably lower operating speed of a propeller.
Choice will depend primarily on the power output of the gas turbine. Other factors include, size, engine room placement and possible combination with other engine types.
- High power-to-weight ratio
- Creates little pollution
- High rpm
- Variety of configurations possible
- High fuel consumption
- Relatively short life
