Ships capstans

Need help
choosing?

The ship capstan is a vertical rotating shaft machine used for winding lines and cables. The power providing rotation to the shaft can be electric, hydraulic, pneumatic or gas. There are many different types of capstan, depending on size and power. Capstans on ships are usually located on the forecastle and poop decks for ready access during maneuvers.

Applications

The ship capstan is used for the handling of lines during berthing and undocking maneuvers.

Technologies

Regardless of type, all ship capstans have two basic parts: the power source and the rotating shaft, also called the drum. In many cases, the only visible part is the drum, with the motor located below deck to reduce clutter.

How to choose

The characteristics of the lines and cables to be handled will determine the dimensions and the head size. The power source, the power output and the location are other factors that must be taken into account.

Disadvantages

- Not set up for chains
