The Online Boating and Maritime Exhibition
A ships video camera records images from on and around a commercial vessel and transmits them to a screen, generally on the bridge.
These devices serve primarily to enhance on-board security through video surveillance. They can also be used to observe the sea at night, for hold surveillance when carrying dangerous cargo aboard LNG and chemical tankers and bulk grain carriers, or to render blind spots visible to the bridge. Underwater models record propeller operation and hull conditions.
Such cameras are generally housed in a particularly rugged watertight case designed to withstand explosions, bullets and rocks. Night vision is achieved by incorporating infrared or thermal sensors. Certain models include gyroscopic stabilization, while others have a laser or spotlight aiming system.
Choice will depend on the type of cargo and the range of external dangers like terrorism or piracy that might threaten the ship in one or another operational zone. Image quality depends on sensor type and resolution.
