A schooner has two or more masts with gaff-rigged, Marconi and/or square sails. The time-tested design and rig make it fast and maneuverable. However, sail handling requires a certain number of crew.
Schooners are suitable for any kind of sailing, both coastal and offshore.
Schooners were traditionally built of wood. They have two or more masts at least one of which is forward of the mainmast. They may carry a combination of gaff, Marconi and square sails in various configurations on the lower and topmasts. There is usually a bowsprit to which jibs and, sometimes flying jibs are anchored.
Consider the vessel's dimensions, the number of masts and sails and the number of crew required to operate the craft.
