A sailboat warping fairlead is a metal fitting which reduces the abrasion of mooring lines running to the dock. It also helps ensure that moorings, such as spring lines, lie at the proper angle.
Fairleads are used when mooring lines from deck cleats to dock might rub against the rail or lie at too narrow an angle.
Fairleads take many forms, though most are of metal. Plastic models are used only on small boats. Some are closed, like a flattened ring, while others, open at the top, enable rapid insertion or removal of the line. Retractable models sit out of the way within the deck when not in use.
Those with rollers facilitate the passage of the lines, especially in the case of narrow angles, when rubbing can abrade the line or interfere with proper tensioning. Multiple-line models are compartmentalized to prevent the lines from rubbing or interfering with each other.
Choice will depend on mooring line thickness and fairlead features. Aluminum models should be used on aluminum decks to prevent electrolysis. Rollers or rounded internal surfaces will prolong significantly the life of mooring lines. Design should be suitable for the sailboat.
