A sailboat traveler is a fitting which slides along a track fastened to the deck. Its position is changed to adjust sail trim by altering sheet angle.
Travelers are used to fine-tune sail trim. Changing the position of the mainsail traveler alters the sail's angle with respect to the wind. Headsail traveler position affects sail twist, slot opening and clew position in case of sail reduction. While they are found on nearly all sailboats, they are most useful on racers.
The aluminum or stainless steel traveler slides along a streamlined track fastened securely to the deck. It can be immobilized anywhere along the track by a stop pin or by block and tackle on each side of the traveler car. The headsail sheets run through a small block fitted to the traveler.
There must be a track on each side of the mast unless the jib is self-tacking, in which case a single track running athwartships forward of the mast will suffice. The mainsail sheet tackle is fixed to a traveler beneath the boom, either on the cabin roof, at the aft of the cockpit or on the stern deck.
The traveler car is made to fit only one track configuration. A drawing with measurements are essential for obtaining the right model. The car also has a maximum load rating. Type and size of sail are also necessary data for choosing the correct traveler.
