These include working and breaking load, stretch, resistance to UV rays and chafing, handling comfort and suitability for marlinspike seamanship.
How to chooseChoice will depend on specific use, whether cruising or racing. The latter requires light, very strong high-tech material, which is also more expensive. Cruising, on the other hand, requires durable cordage, with the option of using slightly larger diameters than strictly necessary.
Sheets should be pliable and comfortable to handle with a relatively high stretch coefficient to maintain flexibility. Halyards and roller reefing/furling lines should stretch only a little. There are several categories of mooring line. The most flexible, double braided line is also the most comfortable to handle.
