Rondal constantly strives to optimise style and structural soundness. The combination of engineering and style found in our winch bases, mast/spreader connections, spreader lights and so on reflect our attention to detail. Masthead, gooseneck and many other components are designed, cut and milled with the aid of computer assisted machinery to ensure accuracy and cost-effective production. To counteract any problems associated with corrosion, Rondal welds all aluminium tangs, brackets and other fittings. When stainless parts are fitted, maximum effort is made to avoid corrosion in the future. The mastheels are constructed from plate material, either to fit in a standard Rondal maststep or on a Rondal hydraulic mastjack. All masts are completed with a two component polyurethane paint finish. Clients can choose almost every possible colour.
Made of Alustar aluminium plate
In order to bring down the weight and the centre of gravity of our aluminium masts, Rondal developed the alternative method by utilizing ALUSTAR aluminium plate material for the construction of masts.
These masts are engineered and produced to just cover the required Moments of Inertia over the full length of the mast in both longitudinal and transversal direction.

Having been developed for short-handed sailing Rondal hydraulic in-mast furling systems have proven themselves to be reliable and to perform with the minimum of maintenance.Unfurling and furling operations are possible in both clockwise and anti-clockwise direction. For even more ease of handling the hydraulic in-mast furling system can be combined with a hydraulic clew outhaul system.
Available are six sizes hydraulic furling motor driving three sizes furling section for furling masts from 18 to 60 m. The Rollaway mast is a tried and tested system, very reliable and needing little maintenance. The motor drives the luff section through a universal joint and rigging screw. The luff section attaches to the masthead by way of a topswivel.
The mainsail, which attaches to the tack swivel below, is led through the single groove in the luff section and attaches to the halyard swivel above. For added chafe protection the luff section is sheathed in black polyethylene. Rollaway masts can be built from extrusions, plate material or a combination of these.

The demand for lighter masts (and booms) shows no sign of abating as owners request ever-lighter displacement cruising yachts. Anticipating this trend, Rondal became involved in the carbon fibre field at an early stage. Assisted by the Dutch Aerospace Laboratory at the design stage, it is believed that Rondal has chosen the best way of production.
Rondal's start in the specialist field of carbon fibre mast building came with the development of the first rollaway slab-reef boom back in the eighties.
In order to be able to build her first carbon fibre mast in one piece, Rondal took the important step forward with the opening of its high tech 65 meter composite production facility. This unit is fitted with a heating system which guarantees a constant temperature during laminating and which heats the whole workshop up to a temperature of 90° during a cure cycle. Heating up the whole workshop instead of using an autoclave means that during the cure cycle the workshop and the product are accessible and a 98% vacuum can be guaranteed.
Characteristic for the Rondal carbon fibre mast is that, whatever the length, the mast is built in one piece. Building the mast in one piece has the huge advantage that the fibres in the 0° layers run from top to bottom without any interruption in the fibres. All compression forces can be guided safely through the laminate.

Extruded aluminium is an excellent material for making masts. This is where Selden has earned its reputation as world leader in mast making. Today Selden offers a full range of masts and rig equipment in both aluminium and carbon including booms, spinnaker poles, Rodkicker rigid vangs, furling systems and rig linings. All rigs are custom-made, through every calculation and detail, lor each individual boat. We know how much depends on the rig, and there is no room for compromise.
|
|
It's no coincidence that carbon fibre is used in aeroplanes. Carbon composite combines stiffness and strength with low weight. Selden low-weight carbon spars have accentuated longitudinal stiffness. This means that forestay tension can be substantially increased. All experienced racing sailors know what this means in terms of increased performance. The combination of greater stiffness and reduced weight will bring you beyond the speed limits.

A Seldén furling mast lets you operate your mainsail from the cockpit, simply ans easily. Its unique features for reducing friction and initial sail resistance make furling and reefing child's play. And it also makes sailing safer and far easier for you and your crew.

Carbon composites are known for their:
High fatigue tolerance
Stability under environmental exposure
Exceptional strength to weight
All these features make carbon composites attractive not just for the construction of mast tubes and fittings, but also for standing rigging.
Composite Rigging installed the first full set of Element C6 carbon composite rigging on the Farr 52 Georgia in Auckland in March 2003. This set includes all shrouds, jumpers, running backstays and headstay. These pieces now have over five years of service without incident.
Since that time EC6 has been installed on a variety of yachts ranging from 30’ sport boats to 50+ meter Megayachts.
The first set of EC6+ continuous rigging was installed on the Farr 60 Numbers in the spring of 2005. More recently the Open 60 Paprec-Virbac won the Barcelona doubled handed nonstop round the world race with EC6+ carbon shrouds. Post-race testing confirmed that there was no strength degradation. The rigging has been refurbished and reinstalled for the next event.

Hand operated SPARCRAFT furling masts use exclusively furling systems equipped with endless screws. This system is the only one allowing for a safe guidance of the furling control while avoiding overfurling, and also it is the only one which may be operated by a single person ( two hands control).
The sections range from 4,9 kg/ml to 17,6 kg/ml and are a perfect alternative to the traditional SPARCRAFT profiles. It is now possible to offer to the yards, professionals or private customers, either a furling or a traditional mast with the same mast base reference and the same running and standing riggings.

Forespar® has perfected the art of manufacturing carbon fiber equipment not only for the blue water yachts and racers but now for the recreational sailor as well. We have manufactured standard composite poles for over 10 years. We made our first carbon fiber mast in 1979, ten years before anyone else in the U.S.
Forespar® is the world leader in standard composite whisker poles, spinnaker poles and reaching struts. Standard sizing is 2" - 6". Spinnaker poles are offered in double tapered as well as parallel configurations. In addition, we custom design and make poles of bow spirits specifically sized for the head sail of your choice; code zeros, asymmetrical chutes, spinnakers or roller furling genoas.
Typically a composite spinnaker pole will be 40% lighter than a similar aluminum pole yet almost 50% stiffer. Fixed length whisker poles and bow spirits are 50% lighter.
All Forespar® poles are manufactured in eh U.S.A. and assembled in our California plant by professional riggers. HIGH MODULUS ENGINEERING, the premier composite design firm for the 2003 America's Cup racing, is our partner in design and brings to the Forespar® design efforts the wealth of composite engineering learned during this year's cup races.
