A sailboat cable cutter is used to cut through shrouds, stays, backstays and other metal rigging in case of demasting to free the mast and prevent it from damaging the hull.
Every sailboat venturing even a short way offshore should carry a cable cutter. In some countries its presence on board is mandatory.
Cutters have two long metal handles and overlapping jaws, similar to a bolt cutter. Nonslip rubber or plastic grips facilitate use. Sailboat models are treated to withstand the rigors of the marine environment, though regular greasing will prolong life. Models powered by a compressed air cartridge offer nearly effortless operation.
Cable cutters are rated for a maximum diameter of stranded cable or rod rigging, and should be suitable for the thickest rigging element aboard.
