How to choose this product

sail-drive-motor

A sail-drive motor is a propulsion system whose Z-shaped transmission consists of a series of gears terminating with the propeller.

Applications

As it names indicates, this system is particularly suited to sailboat auxiliary power. It avoids many of the drawbacks inherent in shaft transmission.

Technologies

The sail-drive transmits engine torque to the propeller. The horizontal motor turns a horizontal shaft. Gearing links it to a vertical shaft. Additional gears turn another horizontal shaft connected to the propeller.

This system resembles powerboat Z-drives. However, unlike the latter, the sail-drive propeller cannot pivot for steering purposes. A circular neoprene seal around the sail-drive skeg makes the system watertight. The engine can be a diesel or gasoline engine, an electric motor or even a hybrid system.

How to choose

Engine choice will depend on vessel displacement. A minimum of five horsepower per ton is required for a sailboat. Seven horsepower per ton offers a comfortable margin.
