The Online Boating and Maritime Exhibition
A river-running, or whitewater kayak is propelled and steered with a double-bladed paddle designed specifically for turbulent waters with eddies and strong currents.
Such boats are designed for running rapids, rivers and weirs with minimal risk of capsize. The wide, rounded hull makes them suitable for touring, exploration and other recreational uses. Easy to maneuver, they are often the choice of beginners, rental companies and kayaking schools.
The broad, rounded form of these kayaks increase stability and maneuverability. Their short hull allows paddlers to make sharp, precise turns, a particular advantage for avoiding obstacles in whitewater conditions. They are generally made of polypropylene or other sturdy, impact-resistant materials. Inflatable models are easier to maintain and to transport, but are vulnerable to sharp wash rocks.
Choice will depend on the kayaker's age, height, weight and level of proficiency. Inflatable models are easy to transport to and between sites, but are more fragile than rigid versions.
