A rigid inflatable catamaran is a powerboat with two inflatable pontoons set on both sides of a rigid central platform. This configuration makes it more stable than standard rigid inflatables.
These craft can be used as dinghies or as day-boats, for fishing or towing water skiers, wakeboarders and inflatable banana boats. Professional models are designed for shellfish culture, diving, construction, transportation and other activities.
The platforms are generally made of laminated polyester/fiberglass; the inflatable pontoons are usually Hypalon® or PVC/Neoprene. Some models have passenger seats, swim ladders, Bimini tops or similar features. The helm can be an exposed central or lateral console, or a small wheelhouse.
There are both outboard and inboard versions. Hydrojet inboards use high-pressure water jets for propulsion, eliminating the inherent drawbacks of propellers including potential danger to swimmers or water skiers entering and leaving the water at the stern.
Determine whether the vessel's primary use will be recreational or for a specific professional activity. Engine choice can be problematic. While outboards offer a wider size selection, they are quite noisy.
- Superior stability
- Spacious platform
- Difficult to turn
- Pounds in rough seas
