A regatta buoy is an inflatable device marking a turning point or other boundary of a sailboat race course.
ApplicationsSuch buoys can be used for all sorts of competition as well as for training sessions.
TechnologiesCylinders, cones, tetrahedrons and other shapes are used for regatta buoys. Most are yellow, orange or white. The color can indicate the starting or finish line, course layout alteration or other information stipulated by the race instructions. They are usually made of UV-resistant PVC, and are equipped with inflation and dump valves. Some have handles.
Buoys can be customized with a logo. Certain models have transparent plastic pockets for a temporary logo. They are held fast by a mooring line attached directly to the underside of the buoy or to separate straps or a net, reducing the stress placed on the buoy and extending its useful life.
Buoys designed for long courses should be bigger than those for short ones for better visibility from afar. Colors are often codified by ISAF, the International Sailing Federation. Smaller, more compact models are recommended for training purposes.
