A rectangular portlight is a small, watertight window installed in the hull or another structure of a boat to illuminate the interior.
ApplicationsRectangular portlights are among the most common type. They are simple to install and their aesthetic qualities make them suitable for any area of the vessel. They are found on most cruising power- and sailboats, as well as on some work boats.
TechnologiesA portlight consists of a stainless steel or anodized aluminum frame holding an acrylic or Plexiglas pane with a watertight seal around the edges. Certain models open using a system of hinged, screw-down or friction compression closures, called dogs. Others slide open. The frame can be bolted to the hull or, with some models, simply glued in place. The finish layer is metal or plastic. The corners are more or less rounded, depending on model.
How to chooseNational laws stipulate portlight thickness, position and maximum number for different vessel categories. Appropriate authorities should be consulted before installation. Models which open ventilate as well as illuminate the boat's interior, but can represent a danger if not closed while underway.
