A recreational kayak can be suitable for real enthusiasts. However, its sturdiness and stability make it ideal for those who take to the water only occasionally. There are even inflatable models.
In contrast to touring kayaks, recreational models are designed primarily for short outings.
These craft are often a little wider than other kayaks for improved stability. The hull is rounded or chined rather than V-shaped. The most common material is polyethylene, which is very sturdy. However, this makes the vessel 20 to 30% heavier than a fiberglass model of the same size.
Recreational kayaks are often less well-equipped than other models. They have less storage space, feature no rudder, and no daggerboard. However, it is possible to add features to any model.
