A racing keelboat is a sailboat whose stability is ensured by a keel which serves both as ballast and to counter drift. It is designed for competition and superior performance.
These boats are designed primarily for racing. However, decked versions are flexible enough to be suitable for cruising or coastal racing/cruising.
Most such craft are of light, sturdy composites like fiberglass and carbon, though some traditional models are made of wood. They generally carry a lot of canvas, the keel allowing for a degree of sailing stiffness that centerboarders cannot match.
Some of these boats belong to classes that are widely raced, including in the Olympics (e.g., the Star class). They are very often sloop-rigged, carrying a Marconi mainsail and headsails. Some have a masthead rig, while others use a 9/10ths or other fractional rig. They carry one or several crew, depending on size. The Neo 495, Mini-J and others are designed for individuals with reduced mobility.
The number of crew will depend on the size of the craft. Some classes are more common in certain areas than others.
