The Online Boating and Maritime Exhibition
A racing kayak holds one or sometimes two paddlers, and is designed for competition and high performance, in contrast to recreational models.
These craft are designed for training or competition in one of the many different kayaking events.
Such kayaks are designed to be particularly light. Some are made of fiberglass and other traditional materials, though most use carbon combined with Kevlar® or similar products for greater performance. A honeycomb layer is often included in sandwich construction. The hull shape depends on the sport and whether the kayak will be used at sea, in calm waters or whitewater.
Budget and level of expertise will determine the suitable model. Carbon/Kevlar® kayaks are much lighter and faster than fiberglass models, which themselves offer better performance but are more expensive than polypropylene touring versions. Determine your desired characteristics: maneuverability, ergonomics, convenience, design or some other aspect.
