The Online Boating and Maritime Exhibition
A power pedestal is a port structure furnishing access to electrical shore power along the dock.
These units have one or more electrical outlets to provide power to nearby boats. They vary in socket configuration, voltage and amperage. Many are of stainless steel for its modern aesthetics and resistance to the marine environment, though fiberglass is also used.
A differential circuit breaker is essential for automatic shutoff in case of overload or short circuit. Most also provide dock lighting, some have fresh water taps, while others incorporate connections for Internet, television or other services. Certain pedestals are metered or coin-operated to control use.
Choice depends primarily on the range of services to be offered. Other factors include distance between pedestals, outlet configuration and matching external design to other port features. Local regulations, voltage and amperage requirements must be observed.
