Apart from the direct environmental impact, the financial and public relations implications associated with an unforeseen pollution incident can be extremely damaging.
It is estimated that over 30 million gallons of oil is leaked from ships during normal operations in ports and harbours every year more than three times the Exxon Valdez oil spill. Machinery failure and human error are the major contributing factors. According to industry data, leakages of five to 1,000 tons have dropped dramatically in the last few years, but those under five tons have eased only marginally.
Swift initial containment response not only reduces environmental impact but also demonstrates that the responsible company or organisation has effectively planned to mitigate the risks associated with such unfortunate but inevitable incidents.
Over 80% of reported oil spills occur within port and harbour areas. However, the majority are small in size and result from normal operations such as loading and bunkering (MPCU 1997).
Sea Spill, a launchable emergency response containment system, has been specifically designed to provide a cost effective solution to these issues Launched from Restech range of PLT maxi and mini pneumatic systems, with extended range capabilities offered by SeaSam, the Sea Spill is effective even in strong wind and rough sea states.

The ROC Barrier (Rapid Oil Containment) - Extremely compact and easy to deploy. It ensures the rapid response and containment of oil spills unlike anything available in the marketplace today.
The ROC Barrier is the only oil containment system small enough to allow boats to store 1000%u2019 of barrier on board. Marinas, harbors, ports, beaches and other water entry points can store the ROC Barrier on site to allow rapid response to an oil spill. The film laminate used in the ROC Barrier is essentially a two dimensional product when stored and a third dimension (bulk) is added on deployment. The ROC Barrier will contain up to 100% of the oil in a spill without absorbing water. The oil can be reclaimed for use, dramatically reducing cleanup costs.

As a world leader in technical coated fabrics, Pennel & Flipo is constantly innovating and has recently launched a revolutionary pre-made rubber boom.
This innovation allows boom manufacturers, who are not equipped with rubber vulcanizing equipment, to compete in the high-end market of heavy-duty booms.
This 2-ply fabric is calendered in a way that includes pre-made chambers or channels that can be inflated or used as a ballast sleeve.
Pennel & Flipo offers several standard designs and can also accommodate your custom requirements in dimensions, coating gauge and colour.
|
|
At Pennel & Flipo, we have developed a very strong composite of PU and double-ply polyester to be used as permanent boom.
You can achieve easier deployment given the increased suppleness of our formulation.
Also, most competitors’ fabrics are press-coated, a process that allows threads to move to the surface of the coating, permitting water and pollutants to infiltrate, thereby reducing the abrasion resistance and the mechanical properties down the road.
Our process consists of laminating films of PU on 2 layers of weave, a process that ensures increased longevity. Given that the middle layer of the PU is protected by 2 weaves, it maintains its’ original properties over a much longer period of time.
We formulated a high end virgin Polyether PU, not blended, ensuring up to 3 times the abrasion resistance of competitive products. This heavy double-ply composite is not thermo-set, thereby allowing the welding of seams and accessories.
|
|
Pennel & Flipo has developed a range of “open weave” PU fabrics, a process that encapsulates the threads and allows for the bonding of both sides of the coating. This design provides outstanding adhesion levels and is recommended where high “peel” strength is required such as in welded closures of the inflatable sections of oil booms.
We offer a wide selection of weaves to match your tensile specifications, from 225 lbs/inch - 200 daN/5cm tensile strength and higher. Coatings can be balanced or unbalanced and gauges adjusted to your specific requirements, from 20 to 45 oz./yd² - 650 to 1500 g/m². Various colours are available.

The THOMSEA small net was designed for coastal waters, harbours or sheltered waters and can be towed by a boat that is at least 4 metres long and 30 hp. The filtering cod-end is able to contain 1.7 tons of crude oil or debris before it has to be hoisted. It can be reconditioned and reused very quickly, after about 20 minutes.A special version has been created for oyster boats and Mediterranean fishing boats with a collecting capacity of 2.3 tons. Imagine a fleet of 40 to 50 oyster boats, each equipped with a THOMSEA net. These seamen have a local knowledge that makes it difficult to envisage a better protection for oyster beds and shellfish farms.
|
|
During the PRESTIGE oil spill, fishermen, using the THOMSEA nets under orders from the Navy, managed to prevent more than 2,400 tons of heavy oil from reaching the French coast, without getting oil on themselves or on their boats.
Since 2003, the Navy has adopted the THOMSEA concept and trains several times a year with fishermen using the THOMSEA nets. The large THOMSEA net can be towed by one or two boats that are at least 12 metres long and 150 hp.
The filtering cod-end is able to contain 8 tons of crude oil or debris before it has to be hoisted. It can be reconditioned and reused very quickly, after about 30 minutes.
|
|
|
Putting together a fleet of fishermen, oyster farmers and mussel farmers is vita! as a first line of defence from sea pollution. However, simple common sense would dictate that we plan for a second line of defence to protect the more vulnerable and precious areas, such as estuaries, oyster beds, protected zones, etc. It was with this thought in mind that we designed an adapted form of the THOMSEA net - a channel net. which can be fixed in position and which uses the force of tidal currents to collect heavy oil and debris arriving in an estuary. This net is held in place by stakes on each of the river banks (maximum 50 metres apart) and can collect up to 5 tons. The currents at high tide carry the waste to the filtering cod-end. which automatically closes when the tide goes out. thereby retaining the pollutant until the next tide comes in and the collecting process can start again.

Alfa Laval fuel oil filter
Automatic filters designed specifically for full flow filtering of lubrificating oils for trunk piston and crosshead engines and full-flow filtration of the heavy fuel oils used in modern two-stroke and four-stroke diesel engines.
Fuel oil filter
The F type range of Alfa laval automatic fuel oil filter systems provides effective full-flow filtration of fuel oil (FO), heavy fuel oil (HFO) and marine diesel oils (MDO) up to 700 cSt/50°C. These fuels are widely used in modern two-stroke and four-stroke diesel engines, and the quality and cleanliness of such fuel has an important influence on engine efficiency, fuel consumption, reliability and service life.
This range of automatic fuel oil filter systems only requires very limited investment yet helps ensure reliable engine operation, along with peace of mind for those dependent on the engine working as intended. The robust, space-saving design makes these units easy to install as well as to retrofit as upgrades to existing installations.
These units use fuel oil that has already been filtered to backflush the filters, doing away with any need for a compressed air supply. This backflushed oil is then cleaned by refiltration in a special filter-equipped diversion chamber (which also uses the same backflushing principle) before being recirculated into the system. This diversion chamber acts as an automatic maintenance-free sludge treatment system, collecting and concentrating the particles backflushed from the full-flow chamber and the subsequent cleaning process into a concentrate sludge.

Harken 3-speed pumps push oil faster and more efficiently than other pumps on the market, reducing wasted time and energy. At preset points, the pump automatically shifts to the next speed. Shift points can be adjusted to fit crew strength and sailing style. We also make a 2-speed pump that offers the same high-strength handles, user-adjustable autoshifting, and mounting accessories.
Bolt holes in the Hardkote-anodized 6061-T6 aluminum pump housing are threaded with stainless-steel inserts to prevent corrosion around the stainless bolts. An optional adhered isolation plate improves load distribution even more by transferring torque directly to the mounting surface rather than the bolt holes. The piston shafts and rocker arms are machined from 17-4PH stainless steel.
Pumps have splined shafts to ensure a tight fit and to allow the handle to be mounted at the exact angle you choose. Standard roundtipped handles are made of knurled 6061-T6 Hardkote-anodized aluminum and fit most marine pumps. Grand Prix alternatives include carbon and knurled titanium. An optional square-tipped style allows the handle to be rocked 5 degrees laterally from the pumping direction to store against the cockpit wall.
