The Online Boating and Maritime Exhibition
An outboard motorboat is propelled by a motor or motors mounted on the transom. This type of propulsion is particularly common on small craft not requiring a very powerful engine.
These vessels are usually relatively small, with a transom designed to accommodate a motor. This arrangement avoids piercing the hull for a propeller shaft or other drive system. An alternative is an inboard engine with stern-drive, also called an inboard/outboard.
Outboards are especially practical for those without a slip or dock space. They are easily trailered and are lighter than inboard stern-drive craft. Outboard motors run exclusively on gasoline, making fuel consumption a concern. Inboard diesels are preferable for frequent use.
