An oil skimmer recovers petroleum pollution from the water's surface once it has been concentrated in a small area. The skimmer floats on the water or is attached to a rigid arm extending from a pollution control vessel.
Floating barriers are put in place to prevent the spread of oil spills or slicks. Then, the difficult task of pumping up the polluted water and separating it from the viscous oil is handled by the skimmer.
Skimmers are equipped with pumps and filters. The various types include weir skimmers and those with oleophilic brushes, drums or discs.
Choice of skimmer will depend on the viscosity of the pollutant. Sea state is an important factor, since waves reduce skimmer efficacy.
