Raster charts:
Produced from charts provided by national hydrographic services, raster charts are highly accurate. Scanned from paper charts, you can display the official paper charts you are used to. One specific aspect is related to the paper chart’s different scales: there are several chart scales for the same area giving you more or less details… It is important to understand that when you zoom on raster charts, you open the next level of charts at that area, changing scale to increase details.
Vector charts:
Vector charts are reproductions of official charts. Data is digitized in a format which allows additional information not available in raster charts such as: information about buoys, lighthouses, or Point of interest. In some parts of the world, national hydrographic services don’t exist and vector charts can be less accurate although they are often the only references point available.
It is hard to say which one is the best, the choice is often based on user habits. A paper chart navigator will choose raster charts while those who are used to vector charts users might never want to change.
MaxSea:
MaxSea Time Zero will satisfy both choices. MapMedia’s .mm3D catalogue, specially designed for our new software, offers the choice between both formats (dependant on the availability)… MapMedia raster charts are based around the relationship with official hydrographic services with whom we have worked within the past. Our vector chart information is mainly provided by Navionics© and S57 database. MapMedia is precursor on the recreational boating market by following S52 standrads: IMO (simplified iconography)

Digital water charts are being developed in different formats globally. Each area has its own suppliers of chart information. Stentec developed our own DKW2 format especially for water sports for the WinGPS 4 series. Translated, DKW2 means Digital charts for the water sports, version 2.
Our goal is to supply the water sporter with the most recent charts. Safety for boat, as well as crew always comes first. A free update service is therefore included for the current edition.

Transas SENC Chart Collection
SENC (System Electronic Navigation Chart) is an ENC data set that has been compiled into the internal format of a specific Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS). Transas is the only ECDIS manufacturer providing a SENC Service. Transas delivers official ENC data in SENC format as per the IHO amendment to paragraph 3.3 of S-52, and the new Techni cal Resolution A3.11 adopted at the IHO’s 16th International Hydrographic Conference.
Transas SENC Distribution Service was fully tested and approved by Det Norske Veritas (DNV) in June 2004 and the collection currently includes charts from PRIMAR, NOAA and IC-ENC.

S57 Navicarte/Livechart - vectorial cartography resulting from the national hydrographic services for coastal navigation
Compatible with Extra Navicarte & Navicarte seaPro
The format S57 Navicarte/Livechart is a derivative of S57 ENC for a use specific to the pleasure. Certain information suitable for the pleasure was added to these charts so that they approach visually the style of the charts paper (pictograms on the coast, range of the bathymetric zones, etc). These charts are updated every year.
The Navicarte format is equivalent to the S57 format with a posting close to the charts Navicarte paper. The bathymetric data result from the charts of the SHOM, according to convention SHOM /Navicarte n°2-89. They are the subject of an annual update and are faithful to the style of Navicarte reading.
