How to choose this product

A motorboat steering wheel is similar in form and function to that of an automobile. It is usually smaller than wheels found on sailboats.

Technologies

Wheels come in many different sizes and designs. One or several spokes link it to the hub. A male-female cone assembly held in place by a key links the hub to the steering system, which can be hydraulic or use a chain or another mechanism.

Wheels are made of stainless steel, aluminum, wood, composites or several of these combined to provide aesthetic and tactile pleasure. Some wheels are covered by non-slip material for a better grip. A knob attached to the wheel will allow one-handed steering, including the possibility of turning it through several rotations without letting go.

How to choose

Choice depends on type and make of steering system, be it hydraulic, cables, rack, chain or another mechanism. The wheel also must match the steering hub. Wheel aesthetics and vessel design also play a role. For example, a fast runabout should have a small wheel made from modern materials, rather than a large wooden wheel with handles extending from its perimeter.
