The ship's man-overboard boat (MOB) is stowed on deck to be used in emergencies, such as to rescue someone from the water. It can be rigid, inflatable or of mixed construction, and usually is 3.8 to 8.5 meters long. It must be equipped to carry a specific number of seated crew and at least one stretcher. Merchant vessels must carry SOLAS-approved MOBs.
The MOB is used in emergencies, such as the rescue of a person from the sea.
The MOB must be stowed so that it can be launched quickly, even when the ship is moving at low speed. It has an inboard or outboard engine offering sufficient power and maneuverability to carry out rescues in choppy seas.
Choice will depend on the boat's size, construction and deck stowage location. Inflatable craft are less durable than rigid models. Merchant ships must carry MOBs that meet governmental and SOLAS regulations.
