The Colt-Pielstick PA6B STC is the latest development of the PA6 engine, intended for ships requiring high-propulsion power combined with a lightweight installation. Available in 12-, 16-, 18-, and 20-cylinder configurations, the PA6B engine is designed specifically for the high demands of naval and commercial markets.
The PA6B engine features Sequential Turbo Charging (STC), which uses two turbochargers in parallel for efficient full-power operation and the use of only one turbocharger for low speed, high-torque operation. The use of one turbocharger maximizes the available energy from the whole engine instead of only half the engine, as is typically done. The extra exhaust energy (double) boosts the turbocharger away from surge conditions and delivers the necessary combustion air to allow engine operation in areas otherwise unattainable.

The concept behind the FM-MAN 27/38 won the prestigious International Seatrade Award for Innovation in 1996. With its simplified and compact design, efficiency, few parts, and low maintenance requirements, the genset and propulsion versions of the 27/38 have the ability to significantly improve the effectiveness of any aspect of ship operations and/or cargo handling.
All support functions %u2014 oil and water pumps, coolers, filters, and safety and regulator valves %u2014 are housed in a single front-end box for easy access and maintenance. The engine is lower and shorter than the other longstroke engines in its power class. It can be installed in restricted engine room areas. The L27/38 is designed for 20,000 to 25,000 service hours between overhauls, and requires only minimal maintenance. Each complete cylinder assembly can be removed as a unit for maintenance or replacement, without requiring a large overhaul height. The L27/38 meets IMO NOx emission limits. Its automatic lube oil filter eliminates the disposal problems associated with conventional paper filter elements.

The Colt-Pielstick PC4.2B engine is the latest design of the PC4 family of engines. As a result of continued research and service experience, the PC4.2B engine has achieved a reduced specific fuel consumption. Like the proven PC product line, the PC4.2B features high engine plant availability and reliability, low manning levels, and ease of maintenance. The PC4.2B engine can be resiliently mounted.
Colt-Pielstick PC4.2B Ease of Maintenance Features
- Bolt tensioning accomplished through use of hydraulic tools
- Numerous quick disconnects are used in fluid handling and drain systems
- Crankcase and valve gear accessible through hinged inspection doors
- All electrical and pneumatic inputs routed to common junction boxes
- Major components readily accessed for visual inspection and maintenance

With over 840 engines in operation, the Colt-Pielstick PA6 is respected worldwide for its reliability and its incredibly advanced technology. This engine has been expanded to include the longstroke %u201CB%u201D version, which is 25 percent more powerful than the PA6. The PA6B has a redesigned connecting rod, crankshaft, cylinder head, and liner with an anti-bore polishing ring. In addition to excellent fuel consumption, the PA6B engine already meets the EPA's stringent Tier II emissions standards going into effect in 2007.
All feed pumps (fresh water, lube oil, and fuel oil) are driven by the engine. The lubricating circuit including the oil filter is fully integrated into the engine. This results in increased reliability, safety, and simplified installation. The PA6B engine incorporates an integrated combination plate heat exchanger (Combi-Cooler) for cooling both lube oil and the water cooling loop.

The V250 proves it’s possible to meet the emissions compliance requirements of U.S. EPA Tier 2 without sacrificing fuel efficiency. In this new engine, improved fuel management, a new combustion system design and refined cooling together deliver fuel savings of as much as 6.5%, compared to our earlier engine designs. At the same time, the V250 meets the EPA’s new, more stringent emissions guidelines as well as Marpol Annex VI standards.
