A mainsail traveler car is a fitting used to adjust the angle of the sail with respect to the wind by moving the sheet attachment point along a transverse track.
This gear is particularly useful on racing craft to fine-tune sail trim for optimum performance. It is found on a growing number of production boats, as well. Travelers are nearly indispensable on racing dinghies and multihulls.
The traveler car slides along its track on a friction system in which the car is in contact with the track or on ball bearings, which minimize friction between the car and the track.
The system is made of light, sturdy materials such as aluminum or composites of carbon or titanium. There is a stainless steel shackle, a fork or similar device, sometimes pivoting, to hold the mainsail tackle. Car position is adjusted via tackle on each side or via a spring-loaded pin moved from hole to hole along the track.
Traveler cars have a maximum load rating. Choice will depend on boat type, mainsail area and type of sheet tackle. Ball bearing systems slide more easily than others, but are also more expensive. Each car is designed for only one track type. Precise configuration and dimensions are essential information for separate acquisition.
