The Online Boating and Maritime Exhibition
A lifebuoy light is a floating safety lamp which automatically illuminates, usually when inverted.
These devices are an indispensable complement to lifebuoys aboard any vessel sailing at night. Regulations around the world require them on both commercial and recreational vessels.
The waterproof case contains batteries, is weighted at the bottom and stored on deck upside down. When thrown into the sea, for example after a crew member gone overboard, it floats bulb-end up, illuminated by an ingenious automatic switch.
Some models are activated by seawater completing the circuit between two contacts. Others emit smoke to facilitate daytime location. The light beam may be steady, flashing or even stroboscopic. Halogen, incandescent and LED (light-emitting diode) bulbs are used.
Choice will depend on bulb and battery type. Lithium batteries and LED bulbs, thanks to their low power consumption, often ensure extended operating time. Smoke-emitting models improve chances of daytime rescue. The light should be tested each time the boat leaves port.
